Ice Age Dig

Ice Age Dig at Stump Cross Caverns

For the first time in 25 years, we're opening up a brand-new section of cave at Stump Cross Caverns, a 75-metre extension into the earth. Digging it out has unearthed tonnes of genuine Ice Age mud, and we need your help to sieve through it.

This is the real thing. Not a themed activity with planted finds, but authentic glacial mud that has given up real Ice Age remains here at Stump Cross: wolverine, reindeer, bison, wolf and Arctic fox, with our most recent wolverine discovery made just this January. Now it's your turn to see what's still hidden inside.

Every one-hour session is personally guided by The Yorkshire Cavewoman, who will help you sieve, search and identify your finds on the spot, so you'll know straight away whether you're holding crystal, cave rock or a genuine trace of Ice Age Yorkshire.

Any special Ice Age finds will be kept by Stump Cross Caverns for scientific study and displayed in our visitor centre. But you won't go home empty-handed: the calcite crystal, cave rock, stalactites and stalagmites scattered throughout the mud are all yours to keep. We would never mine or break these formations from the cave itself, but these pieces have already broken away naturally, making them genuine treasures of Stump Cross Caverns to take home.

Come and be part of history.

Please dress to get muddy! This is a real dig with real cave mud. We recommend a change of clothes and sturdy footwear, as it can get boggy underfoot.
